Zine Review
By, Sarah Müller
Since this is the last issue of the zine for this school year, I
figured I’d talk about all of our past issues. Since I didn’t want to review
every single issue, I decided I’d talk about everyone who has contributed, and
my favorite articles from them, whether or not the they are in the current
class.
Alex: My favorite article from Alex was “The Shadow”. I like how she interviewed kids from school and told us about them. I wish she had continued this idea because I feel that she could have had a lot of fun with it.
Alix C: I really like Alix’s “Delectable Ghouls of Horror”. I thought it was really great how she spotlighted people that are really interesting and that some people don’t know a lot about. She did a very good job with it.
Alyssa: Out of Alyssa’s pitches my favorite was her odd story. It was actually kind of funny but also really embarrassing, I’m very glad that didn’t happen to me and am sorry that it happened to Alyssa. It shows that doctors can make mistakes sometimes.
Bryan: So the first semester when Bryan was in the class he did Band Reviews the entire time. I thought that although it was a good idea, it didn’t go very far. He always did about the same genre of music. Although I like the bands that he chose, I think if he had branched out a little more the idea could have gone a lot farther.
Chelsea: When Chelsea was in the class she did “Births and Obituaries” the entire time. I thought this was a very good idea because it introduced us to new kids that many of us didn’t know and those kids that were no longer with us.
Ciara: My favorite contribution from Ciara was her recipes. I think this one was of the things that the zine was missing. Although we brought this idea to the table at the beginning of the year it didn’t fly with most people. However, by surprising people and making good cookies (from what I heard) everyone seemed to enjoy it. I can’t wait to try her recipes.
Colton: I really liked Colton’s creative writing that he contributed. They were all very interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed them.
Hannah: The time that Hannah was in the class she did pictures. Although this was a good idea I think that there were a few things wrong. She didn’t take that many pictures and always took pictures from her circle of friends. However, they were good pictures and the captions were pretty funny sometimes.
Jennifer: I thoroughly enjoyed Jennifer’s opinion piece about being a new student. I could relate to it since I considered myself a new student because I came to this school with only eight weeks left in the [2006-2007] school year. I thought that this was a good piece and wish that more people would do opinion articles.
Kate and Robin: Kate and Robin only did one pitch and that was together. They talked about beauty acceptance in other cultures and things that are considered beautiful in other cultures. I thought that this was a great article because it opened up a lot of people’s eyes about how it hurts to be pretty and how sometimes cultures can be very hurtful.
Kim: My favorite of Kim’s Quips was her “Santa Makes Kids Cry”. I thoroughly enjoyed this article because I felt that it was very true and funny. I also liked her contribution to the story chain even if it never got added on.
Lexi: I enjoyed Lexi’s music reviews. I thought it was good that she had music she liked and didn’t like instead of previous reviews where it was just bands that the author liked.
Madison: I really liked Madison’s zodiac pitches. Although I’m not really into the whole zodiac thing I thought that this was very interesting and something that the zine needed. I thought that her drawings were very appealing to the article and very good.
Marcus: One of the things that Marcus did for the zine was he started ‘Buy Me’. Although it wasn’t that great to start out with, it wasn’t that bad and got better as the months went along. It was nice because his pitch was a little funny (i.e. selling Paige’s soul) and people looked at it.
Michael: I thought Michael’s Fun Facts were very interesting, especially the weird state laws. It’s always interesting to learn facts that you don’t really need in your life but are just cool to know.
Nora:
I really liked Nora’s article about Peru. I didn’t know that much about
Peru and after reading it I realized that Peru seems really interesting. The
food sounds really good especially juan. I think one
thing she could have added is what type of things are popular there. Otherwise,
one of my favorites.
Paige: My favorite contribution from Paige was her shoe review. I thought this was a good idea because there hadn’t really ever been anything fashion-related in the zine, and the shoes she picked the majority of people will like. My favorite shoes were the Prince Nikes and the red cowboy boots. Both of those pairs were pretty tight.
Rage: Rage contributed to the zine by doing “Where’s Blank-O” which is like “Where’s Waldo” but with kids from our school. Out of all of the ones she drew my favorite was “Where’s Paige–O”. This “Where’s Blank-O” featured Paige at the mall. There were about three levels and a lot going on. Besides trying to find “Paige-O” I also liked looking at everything that was going on.
Sophie: Out of all of Sophie’s pitches my favorite was her rant on Valentines Day. I thought it was very funny and a lot of people could relate to it. It was a pretty good length and kept the readers entertained and wanting more.
Sunshine:
Sunshine has done amazing work on the zine, most of which people don’t really
care about. She the editor of the zine (after Katie of course) but most people
don’t even realize she’s there. Once Sunshine started adding “Notes from the
Editor” people started noticing her some more. Personally, I feel that Sunshine
deserves more credit than she’s given. If it weren’t for her the zine wouldn’t
be the way it is. This article wouldn’t even be happening. Thank you so much
Sunshine!
Zane: Zane has always contributed to the zine by doing the monthly news special. Anyone who can do that for seven issues has skills. I think my favorite news special was when Zane analyzed the news. I thought it was very interesting on how he added his own views rather than just simply adding stories that after a while get outdated.
There you go. Those are my favorite articles from the past issues of the zines. It ended up sounding like one of the zine reviews for English class, but that’s okay. Thanks to the zine class for all their hard work and dedication, Sunshine and Katie for being great editors, to those who helped us get the zine running, and to all those who read it. Thanks a bunch!
